Read: Matthew 24:33-44
Key verses: 24:42 Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 24:43 But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 24:44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.
ADVENT is a word for people anticipating the arrival of someone, something or some event. Christian people, you know the type still believing that Christ came and is coming back again, are preparing for another church year that begins on November 27th in 2016. Christian churches are being decorated. Great decorative events might happen in local churches, such as hanging of the greens or the placing of the Advent wreath and candles in worship areas. Looming huge in my mind are the four Sundays of Advent Candle Lighting, when families participate delivering messages of Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace on respective Sundays.
I recall as an acolyte lighting regular Sunday morning candles signifying the life of Jesus Christ as Lord among us. But, as an acolyte and son of the pastor, I never would be requested to light the Advent Candle. During the four Sundays of Advent, lighting of the Advent Candle was always designated for families of laity to ignite the celebrated coming of Christ in the birth of Jesus and the anticipated Parousia (second coming).
Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace are the messages given through words said and Scriptures read signifying the coming fulfillment of promises delivered through the first arrival of Christ in the world. Purple Candles each Sunday of Advent with the option of using a Pink candle on the third Sunday of Advent, which emphases "JOY". The candles, placed in a circular wreath, surround the Christ Candle (white) placed in the center of the Advent Wreath. It sets a joyous environment for makings of the other traditions that are included in the observance of Advent and Christmas.Choirs are preparing special music selections remembering the coming of Christ or long-awaited second coming of Christ. Still, each year I ponder questions such as: What are you expecting during Advent? What might be the yearning within your heart? In the coming four weeks, before thoughts of the coming of Christmas ends on Christmas Eve, might we extend celebrating the birth of Jesus and anticipating the second entrance of Christ?
Trying hard not to be detracted by the emerging challenges in life, Christian pastors may give overtime attention to the developments within their communities that offer opportunities of making disciples of Jesus Christ. The first season of the Christian church calendar ushers in with acknowledgement of the longings within our hearts, while our minds are recalling the historic longings of Jews for the Messiah. In the midst of mental recollections, this preacher is recommending a serious exercise important to neuro-theological reflections on the historic journey of Jews and the adoption of gentles into the plan of salvation. Are you ready for the essential recommendation for enjoying the discoveries of meaning in cognitive processing what is going on in the world, our nation, and our Baldwin community? Are you ready to know what is important to do as we awaiting the second coming of Christ?
My serious recommendation in 2016 is for you to attend Sunday School, hear the Word proclaimed on Sunday mornings at First Church Baldwin United Methodist, fellowship with Spiritual Champions at our coffee hour, and then do the crazy thing as though we are super bowl winners each Sunday: Go to Disney! That is right; go enjoy a Disney movie, for instance: Moana.
The tendency is to become too involved or not involved at all in learning the promises of God through the historical events from the Creation to the Crucifixion, when God, Church, and family fun is all above what God has already done good in the world for the people of God. God has given the gift of life eternal, so be happy for our hope, love, joy and peace is assured from the cradle into eternal celebration.
Yes, Jesus Christ has been here, done that, and He is coming back again. On the in between of the Alpha and Omega...might we enjoy the show? I plan to show up in the fruitful congregation of Baldwin, then Marie and I gonna pray, then stay awake for the show. Christ is showing up; Jesus is soon to come. Ready for the grand appearance? Our hope is set on Jesus.
Come Lord Jesus, come!!!
